Nasdaq Correction AI Selloff

The Nasdaq fell 5.5% on Thursday and closed more than 10% below its recent peak, officially a correction. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 12.2%. Nvidia fell more than 9%, and the Magnificent 7 lost more than $1 trillion in market value in one session.

The catalyst was political. Democrats won control of Congress, and investors began pricing in tighter limits on data center construction. The AI trade was already carrying pressure from high interest rates and heavy capital spending, so the election gave nervous money a reason to leave.

My read: for two years the AI buildout was treated as a question of chips, capital and power. This week the market added a fourth input, political permission, and repriced the whole sector in a day. Asian chip names followed on Friday, with SK Hynix down more than 10%.

For enterprise leaders, the takeaway is not to pause AI plans. It is to stress-test them. If your roadmap depends on a vendor's capacity arriving in a specific place by a specific date, ask what happens when that timeline slips. Vendors with diversified capacity and clear financing will look different from those without.

When you evaluate AI vendors today, how much weight do you give their infrastructure and financing risk?
