Anthropic Compute Margin S1 Update

Anthropic's revenue hit $17B last quarter, up from $11.5B the quarter before. Its compute costs grew faster.

The updated S-1 shows compute took 58% of revenue in the quarter ended Sept 30, up from 48% the quarter before. The compute bill reached $10B, and $5.0B of that was short-term capacity that the filing says costs significantly more than multi-year contracts.

Revenue per dollar of compute peaked at just over 2x, then fell to 1.72x. Demand grew so fast that Anthropic had to buy capacity on the spot market, from neoclouds, at premium rates.

My read: when revenue grows nearly 50% a quarter, a worse compute margin is a champagne problem. But it shows what even the leading labs depend on. Their economics are tied to a data center buildout that bond markets, power constraints and local opposition can all slow.

For enterprise buyers, that matters. Your model vendor's pricing and capacity commitments are downstream of its compute costs. Those costs are still set by an infrastructure market the vendor does not control.

When you evaluate an AI vendor, do you ask how it secures compute, or only what its model can do?
