Midterms Data Center Backlash

The AI industry has a new constraint, and it isn't compute. It's voters.

Tuesday's midterm exit polling, as reported by TechCrunch, found that more than half of respondents believe AI will do more harm than good. Almost 80% oppose data centers being built in their neighborhoods. Almost 60% said data centers were a crucial or major factor in their vote.

Democrats now control Congress, with Republicans in the White House. That sets up a divided government with a new political constituency that wants limits on where data centers go and how much say local communities have.

My read: the AI buildout has been planned as a capital and power problem. Hyperscalers have committed hundreds of billions on the assumption that sites, permits and grid access will follow. The election suggests a third variable, local consent, and it's one that capex models don't price well.

For enterprise leaders, the practical implication is concentration risk. If your AI roadmap depends on a vendor's capacity coming online in a specific region on a specific date, ask what happens when that site faces a ballot fight or a zoning delay.

How are you factoring political and community risk into your AI infrastructure and vendor planning?
