AI Cyberattack Defense Letter
OpenAI and Anthropic rarely align in public. This week, along with Google, Microsoft, and over 100 other companies, they signed the same warning.
The open letter says AI-enabled cyberattacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated in the coming months as models keep improving. Signatories span both AI labs and the industries with the most to lose: Capital One, Mastercard, Visa, General Motors, Shopify, plus security firms like CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, and Cloudflare.
What stands out isn't the warning itself. It's the fix they're proposing. Not "regulate AI faster." Not "pause development." Their ask is that organizations make cyber defense an immediate leadership priority and close the basic software weaknesses they already know about.
Read that carefully and it's a tell. The companies building the models capable of powering more sophisticated attacks are telling everyone else the problem isn't the AI yet, it's the unpatched fundamentals most organizations haven't gotten to. That's a harder message to act on than "wait for regulation," because it puts the responsibility back on every leadership team reading it.
For any company running critical infrastructure, financial systems, or customer data at scale, AI security just moved from next year's budget conversation to this quarter's.
What's the AI-related security gap in your own organization you're least confident is actually closed?
