OpenAI ChatGPT Sponsored Agents
OpenAI announced this week that ads inside ChatGPT can now talk back.
Starting September 16, users who click a labeled ad can enter a separate, clearly marked conversation with that business's own AI agent — ask about fit, specs, return policy, whatever matters to them — before ever leaving ChatGPT. HubSpot is the first CRM partner and Shopify the first ecommerce partner, meaning any merchant on either platform can spin up a ChatGPT ad campaign without touching a new tool.
This is a bigger shift than it looks. Search advertising trained us to bid on keywords. Social advertising trained us to bid on attention. Conversational advertising bids on resolution — the ad's job is no longer to get a click, it's to answer the question that was stopping the purchase.
For B2B and B2C marketers alike, that changes what "ad copy" even means. The headline matters less than the depth of the knowledge base sitting behind the agent. Weak product information becomes immediately, embarrassingly visible the moment a prospect starts asking real questions.
I think this favors companies that already have their documentation, specs, and FAQs in genuinely good shape — and exposes the ones that don't.
Where do you think this leaves the businesses that aren't ready for their ads to be interrogated in real time?
