China Rebukes Amodei Essay

Dario Amodei published an essay last Friday arguing the US needs to keep restricting advanced AI chip and chipmaking equipment exports to China, warning that a Chinese lead in frontier AI would be dangerous for everyone.

Three days later, China's Foreign Ministry called it out by name at a press briefing, labeling it fearmongering and vicious competition that disrupts global AI governance.

That escalation matters more than the essay itself. When one AI executive's position on export policy draws a direct rebuttal from a national government, it confirms something enterprise leaders should already be planning around: AI infrastructure decisions are no longer purely technical, they're geopolitical bets. Chip supply chains, cloud vendor selection, and even which model provider you standardize on are increasingly downstream of how this rivalry plays out.

Companies still treating AI procurement as a pure technology decision are behind. The ones building scenario plans for further export restrictions or a bifurcated AI stack are the ones who won't get caught flat-footed.

Where do you think this goes next, continued escalation or a negotiated truce?
