OpenAI AI Phone

The app store model has survived for 18 years. OpenAI may be about to end it.

Reports this week suggest OpenAI is building a smartphone — in partnership with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare — where AI agents replace apps entirely. No downloading. No switching. Just tell the agent what you need and it handles the workflow end to end. OpenAI confirmed a first hardware product announcement is coming in H2 2026.

This is not a better phone. It is a different paradigm.

The app economy generated over $935 billion in 2023. Every major platform — Apple, Google, Meta, Salesforce — was built on the assumption that users navigate between discrete software tools. AI agents collapse that assumption. If an agent can book a flight, draft the follow-up email, update the CRM, and notify the team without switching apps, the interface layer that justified those platforms disappears.

The companies most at risk are not the ones you think. It is not the hardware makers. It is the SaaS businesses whose entire value proposition is "we have the best interface for this task." When the interface is the agent, the moat is the data and the workflow — not the UI.

OpenAI is not just building a phone. It is building the operating system for the next decade of enterprise software.

What does your tech stack look like in a world where the app layer is optional?
