Anthropic 2030 Economic Scenarios

Anthropic didn't publish one prediction about AI's economic future. It published three, and the one getting the least attention is the one leaders should actually be planning around.

The model comes from Anthropic's economics team, built on a new working paper and a survey of 10,980 US adults fielded in August. It maps three scenarios for the US economy through 2030.

Modest: AI's impact looks like the internet's. GDP reaches $34.1 trillion, about 1.6% above baseline.

Extreme: AI handles nearly everything. GDP hits $44.4 trillion, a 32.4% jump. This is the number getting the headlines.

Substantial: AI handles roughly half of all knowledge work by 2030. Growth roughly doubles the normal rate. Unemployment settles near 5%. And wages for knowledge workers stay flat.

That middle scenario is the one worth sitting with, because it's the one most leadership teams are quietly already betting on when they talk about AI productivity gains. And it says growth goes up while pay for the people driving that growth doesn't move.

If that's the base case, the conversation inside most companies right now is incomplete. Productivity roadmaps are being built without a wage roadmap attached.

If AI absorbs half of knowledge work and the economy grows faster, but the paycheck of the person doing that work doesn't change, is that still a future your organization is optimizing for?
