Anthropic Decart Acquisition Scrapped

Anthropic looked hard at a six billion dollar acquisition this year, then walked away from it.

The company had reportedly done real due diligence on Decart, a startup building chip efficiency tools to cut AI training and inference costs. That's the kind of company every major lab has reason to want right now. Nvidia just closed its thirteen billion dollar purchase of Hugging Face. Stripe finalized a seven billion dollar deal for OpenRouter. The pattern this year has been simple: if a startup solves your compute problem, you buy it.

Anthropic didn't. And in a market where consolidation has become the default move, that's arguably the more revealing decision.

Walking away from a deal this size after diligence usually means one of two things: the integration risk outweighed the savings, or the company decided it would rather keep optionality through partnership than take on the operational weight of ownership. Either read says something about how Anthropic is thinking about growth right now, capital discipline over headline-grabbing scale.

Not every AI company needs to own its supply chain to compete in it.

Is this smart restraint in an overheated M&A market, or a missed chance to lock in a cost advantage before a competitor does?
