AI Agent ROI Gap
97% of companies have deployed AI agents. Only 29% can show real ROI.
New 2026 data from WRITER's survey of 2,400 executives and employees tells the story in three numbers: 97% of companies deployed AI agents in the past year, 36% have no formal plan to supervise them, and only 29% report significant ROI.
That gap is the real headline of this AI cycle. The hard part was never getting agents into the building. It was rewiring the work around them.
Deployment is a procurement decision. ROI is an operating-model decision. Most organizations made the first and skipped the second, which is why so many are running agents inside processes that were designed for humans doing the work manually.
The 29% pulling ahead aren't using better models. They redesigned the workflow first, defined what "good" looks like, and built governance before scale instead of after the incident. The model became the easy part. The system around it became the moat.
The companies that win the next 18 months won't be the ones with the most agents deployed. They'll be the ones who can actually measure what those agents are doing.
If you've deployed agents, do you know — with numbers — what they've returned? Or is ROI still a feeling?
