What GitHub Copilot does

GitHub Copilot sits inside a developer's editor and offers code completions, function suggestions, and next-edit proposals as they type. It works across a wide range of programming languages and integrates directly into VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, Neovim, and several other environments, so developers rarely need to leave their existing workflow.

Beyond line-by-line suggestions, Copilot includes a chat interface for explaining code, answering questions about a codebase, and proposing edits. Business and Enterprise plans add agent-driven workflows, where tasks can be assigned to AI agents that plan and execute work in the background, and then surfaced for human review before merging.

Plans range from a free tier with limited monthly completions up to team and enterprise tiers that include access controls, audit logs, IP indemnity, and governance tooling. Paid plans for individuals start at $10 per month (Pro+ $39, Max $100); the Business plan, aimed at teams, runs $19 per user per month, and Enterprise $39.

Key capabilities

Real-time code completion

As a developer writes, Copilot suggests the next lines, functions, or entire blocks of code based on the surrounding context. Suggestions appear inline and can be accepted, dismissed, or modified.

Chat assistance in the editor

Developers can ask Copilot questions about their code, request explanations, or have it propose edits through a chat panel available in VS Code, JetBrains, and Visual Studio.

Agent-driven background tasks

On paid plans, developers can assign tasks to AI agents that plan, explore, and execute work autonomously, with results reviewable before any code is merged.

Multiple IDE and platform support

Copilot is available as an extension in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Vim, Eclipse, and Azure Data Studio, and is natively integrated into GitHub.com on the Enterprise plan.

Team governance and access controls

Business and Enterprise plans let administrators manage which users have access, set usage policies, review audit logs, and control which AI models or third-party agents developers can invoke.

Model choice and third-party agents

Paid plans allow teams to select from a catalog of underlying AI models and to connect third-party agents such as Claude by Anthropic or OpenAI Codex alongside Copilot itself.

Best for

  • Development teams already working inside GitHub, VS Code, or JetBrains who want AI assistance without switching tools or platforms.
  • Organizations that want a single place to manage AI coding access, set policies, and review audit trails across their engineering team.
  • Teams looking to reduce time spent on repetitive or boilerplate code while keeping developers in their existing workflow.
  • Businesses that need IP indemnity and data privacy commitments from their AI coding tool—available on Business and Enterprise plans.
  • Companies at any size, from individual developers on a free tier to large enterprises needing org-wide rollout and governance.

Worth knowing

  • Cost scales per seat: at $19 per user per month for the Business plan, a team of 20 developers costs roughly $4,560 per year before any higher-tier add-ons.
  • The free tier caps completions at 2,000 per month and lacks access controls or IP indemnity, making it unsuitable as a long-term team solution without upgrading.
  • Suggestion quality varies by programming language—languages well-represented in public repositories (such as JavaScript) tend to produce stronger results than less common ones.
  • Agent-mode and cloud-agent features are available on paid plans; teams evaluating the free tier will not see the full capability set before committing.
  • If your team works primarily outside GitHub's ecosystem—for example, on GitLab or Bitbucket with non-JetBrains tooling—integration coverage may be narrower than expected and warrants verification before purchase.
