What Clio Duo does

Clio Duo — now evolved into Manage AI — is an AI layer built directly into Clio Manage, the practice management platform. It works across the core tasks a law firm runs on every day: pulling deadlines out of court documents, generating draft invoices, composing client communications, and keeping matter files organised. Because it lives inside Clio rather than sitting alongside it, it works with the case data already in the system.

The tool is designed to produce finished or near-finished work, not just suggestions. A scheduling order becomes a calendar event with related tasks. Matter activity becomes a draft client update. Time and expense entries become a routed invoice ready for a lawyer's approval. At each step there are review checkpoints — the tool does not finalise anything without a human sign-off.

On the data side, Clio states that information is encrypted in transit and at rest, processed within Clio's cloud infrastructure, and never used to train external models. Permission controls mean the AI only accesses information a user already has rights to see.

Key capabilities

Deadline and calendar extraction

Manage AI reads court documents and converts deadlines and hearing notices into calendar events and tasks automatically. It shows the source document alongside the extracted dates so you can verify accuracy before confirming.

Automated invoice drafting

The tool generates draft invoices, matches receipts and expenses to the correct matters, and routes bills to the appropriate approvers with reminders. Billing parameters can be set in advance so invoices follow your firm's rules.

On-demand document drafting

Manage AI drafts motions, letters, and client updates based on activity already recorded in the matter, keeping tone consistent across email, SMS, and the client portal.

Matter organisation and admin

When new matters are set up, the tool can suggest file names, create tasks, notes, and events automatically. It also surfaces priorities and potential risks before they escalate.

Document summarisation

Lengthy documents can be summarised into concise, actionable takeaways, reducing the time spent reading through lengthy case files before meetings or filings.

Integrations with common tools

Clio connects with Outlook, Gmail, QuickBooks, and Dropbox, so the AI assistant operates in an environment that can link to email and accounting tools the firm may already use.

Best for

  • Solo practitioners and small to mid-sized law firms where one person often handles billing, scheduling, and client communication alongside legal work
  • Firms already using or seriously evaluating Clio Manage as their practice management platform — Manage AI is not a standalone product
  • Practice areas with high deadline sensitivity, such as civil litigation, criminal law, family law, personal injury, and real estate, where missed dates carry significant risk
  • Billing managers, paralegals, and legal administrators looking to reduce manual invoice preparation and approval bottlenecks
  • Firms that want human oversight built into AI workflows — the tool is designed around review-and-approve steps rather than fully autonomous action

Worth knowing

  • Manage AI is embedded in Clio Manage and is not available as a standalone tool — firms that do not use or plan to use Clio will need to look elsewhere
  • Clio plans start at $49 per user per month, but Manage AI is only included from the Core plan up, which is priced on request — costs scale with team size and any higher-tier plan requirements
  • Implementation is estimated at one to two weeks, which is relatively light, but staff will still need time to learn review-and-approve workflows and configure billing parameters
  • Firms with heavily customised workflows or practice areas not listed among Clio's supported types — such as large-scale enterprise or highly specialised regulatory practices — should verify fit directly with Clio before committing
  • As with any AI drafting tool, outputs require professional review; the vendor explicitly notes that the tool should complement, not replace, a lawyer's judgment and legal expertise
