What Spellbook does
Spellbook sits inside Microsoft Word as an add-in, so lawyers can review and draft contracts without switching between applications. It flags risky or non-standard terms, adds redlines against your own playbooks, and can draft clauses or full documents from scratch using your preferred precedents.
Beyond individual contracts, Spellbook indexes every signed agreement so your team can search your full contract history and pull answers from past deals. Incoming contracts can flow in from email, Slack, or Salesforce, and the tool routes them into a structured review queue. A separate multi-document workflow feature, called Associate, handles tasks that span several files at once.
Spellbook is used by more than 4,500 in-house legal teams and law firms across 80-plus countries. It holds SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA certifications, complies with GDPR, CCPA, and PIPEDA, and operates under zero-data-retention agreements, meaning contract content is not used to train the underlying models.
Key capabilities
Contract Review and Redlining
Spellbook reads each contract against your standards and highlights terms that fall outside them, inserting suggested redlines directly in Word.
Drafting from Scratch or Precedents
You can generate new clauses or full documents either from a blank slate or by drawing on saved clause libraries and preferred templates.
Market Comparison
The tool compares your contract terms against a database of similar commercial agreements so you can see whether a given clause is standard or an outlier.
Searchable Contract History
Executed agreements are stored and indexed automatically, letting your team query the full archive to find how a term was handled in past deals.
Playbook Encoding
Legal standards and preferred positions can be saved as playbooks, so every review applies the same rules consistently without manual effort each time.
Multi-Document Workflows
The Associate feature handles tasks that involve reviewing or drafting across multiple related documents at the same time.
Best for
- In-house legal teams that handle a high volume of vendor, procurement, or sales contracts and want faster first-pass reviews.
- Law firms doing transactional or commercial contract work who want to reduce time spent on repetitive drafting.
- Teams already working in Microsoft Word who want AI assistance without changing their existing workflow.
- Organizations in legal, real estate, finance, or professional services where contract turnaround speed affects deal velocity.
- Legal departments that need to enforce consistent playbook standards across a large number of incoming agreements.
Worth knowing
- Spellbook requires Microsoft Word — teams that work primarily in Google Docs or other editors will not be able to use it without changing their document workflow.
- Spellbook does not publish prices; pricing is per seat and quoted after a demo, which adds up quickly for larger teams, so budget review is worthwhile before committing.
- The tool is tuned for commercial contract work, so litigation teams or those focused on non-transactional legal tasks may find limited day-to-day value.
- Getting the most from playbook and redline features requires upfront work to encode your legal standards; teams without documented positions will need to build those first.
- While implementation is estimated at under one week, realizing consistent benefits depends on team adoption and training, not just technical setup.
