If your team's spreadsheets have become the system — with lookups breaking, versions multiplying and no one sure which tab is right — Airtable is worth a look now: the Airtable site shows how relational tables, interfaces and automations replace that without a developer.

What Airtable does
Airtable sits somewhere between a spreadsheet and a custom business application. You store data in relational databases, then build interfaces, automations, and reports on top of that data — all without writing code. Teams across operations, marketing, product, and more use it to connect information that would otherwise live in separate tools.
The AI layer adds two practical capabilities. First, an assistant called Omni lets you describe what you want to build in plain language and generates the app structure for you. Second, Field Agents can work across your records automatically — summarising content, enriching data, or triaging items based on rules you set — without someone manually reviewing each row.
Airtable connects to tools many businesses already use, including Slack, Google Drive, Salesforce, Jira, and Zapier. Data can move between these systems through automations, which means less copy-pasting and fewer handoffs between teams.
Key capabilities
Conversational app building
Omni, Airtable's AI assistant, lets you describe a workflow or app in plain English and builds the structure for you. No technical background is needed to get started.
AI agents across records
Field Agents can process large volumes of records automatically — summarising, enriching, or triaging them based on your criteria. This reduces manual review work as your data grows.
Relational databases
Data is stored in connected tables rather than flat spreadsheets, so information entered in one place updates everywhere it's referenced. The platform supports up to hundreds of millions of records.
Custom interfaces and views
Teams can build dashboards and interfaces tailored to their specific role without seeing data they don't need. Different views of the same underlying data suit different working styles.
Workflow automations
Automations handle repetitive steps — such as sending a Slack message when a record status changes or creating a Jira ticket from an Airtable row — without manual triggers.
Governance and security controls
Enterprise features include role-based access controls, SOC 2 and HIPAA compliance, audit logs, and data residency options for Europe and Australia. Customer data is not used to train AI models.
Best for
- Operations or project teams that manage structured data today in spreadsheets and need more automation and visibility without a developer
- Marketing or product teams tracking campaigns, assets, or roadmaps across multiple people who need a shared, connected workspace
- Businesses that want to add AI-assisted data enrichment or summarisation to existing processes without building custom software
- Organisations already using Slack, Salesforce, Google Drive, or Jira who want those tools to share data more fluidly
- Teams that need to roll out a working internal application in one to two weeks rather than waiting months for a custom build
Worth knowing
- Pricing is per seat — at $20 or $45 per person per month, costs add up quickly for larger teams, so headcount matters when comparing total spend against alternatives
- The AI features (Omni and Field Agents) are embedded in the platform rather than optional add-ons, so you are paying for them whether or not your workflows use them heavily
- While setup is straightforward and typically takes one to two weeks, getting the most from relational databases and automations still requires someone willing to invest time in structuring data well from the start
- Businesses that need a straightforward project tracker or simple form tool may find Airtable's breadth more than they require — simpler, cheaper tools may be a better fit
- Advanced governance features such as HIPAA compliance, RBAC, and data residency are enterprise-tier; smaller plans may not include the controls your industry requires
How Airtable compares
Airtable is often compared with tools that do something adjacent. Its real strength is as a flexible data layer: structured, related records that other views, automations and apps sit on.
vs Notion AI
Notion is docs- and wiki-first, with databases inside pages and AI for writing and search. Airtable is database-first — a relational spreadsheet-app hybrid for structured operational data at volume. Teams often keep knowledge in Notion and run the records in Airtable.
vs Monday.com
Monday.com is work management: boards, owners, statuses and dashboards to run projects and pipelines, with a three-seat minimum. Airtable is the more flexible data layer when the shape of your data is the problem — linked records, custom fields and interfaces built around them.
vs ClickUp
ClickUp consolidates tasks, docs, chat and goals into one project workspace. Airtable does not try to be your chat or task app; it is where structured data lives and gets automated. If your pain is scattered work, look at ClickUp; if it is scattered data, look at Airtable.
vs Softr
Softr builds client portals and internal apps, and it can use Airtable as its data source. The two are complementary rather than rivals: Airtable holds and automates the data, and Softr is one way to put a polished, permissioned app in front of it.
