Nvidia OpenAI Ohio Financing

Nvidia isn't just selling the shovels in this AI gold rush anymore. It's reportedly in talks to guarantee up to $250 billion in financing for OpenAI's planned Ohio data center, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The project is a 10-gigawatt campus led by SoftBank's SB Energy, with total costs (including compute) potentially exceeding $500 billion once fully built out. The first 800-megawatt phase is targeted for 2028.

Here's the part worth sitting with. OpenAI doesn't have an investment-grade credit rating. Nvidia's balance sheet would effectively stand in for one, letting lenders price the debt against the chipmaker rather than the borrower. Nvidia is also reportedly discussing a separate arrangement to finance up to $350 billion of OpenAI's chip purchases.

That means Nvidia could end up financing the data center that buys Nvidia's own chips. The company isn't just capturing demand anymore, it's manufacturing the conditions for demand to keep growing.

This is a structural shift worth tracking for anyone in enterprise tech or infrastructure investing. When your chip supplier becomes your lender, the usual signals of market discipline, credit ratings, independent lenders pricing real risk, start to blur. That doesn't mean the bet is wrong. It means the risk is harder to see from the outside.

If the AI infrastructure buildout increasingly depends on suppliers financing their own customers, how do we tell the difference between genuine demand and demand that's being underwritten into existence?
