Google DeepMind Leadership Shakeup
Four of Google DeepMind's most senior researchers didn't get pushed out this week. They walked out, to go compete with the lab they just left.
Demis Hassabis is stepping back from day to day control of DeepMind, moving to Chair and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. In the same stretch, Jeff Dean, Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat announced they're leaving to found a new company, Discovery Loop. Vinyals co-led the Gemini team. His co-lead, Noam Shazeer, left for OpenAI back in June.
Semafor reports Hassabis had been drifting away from Gemini's day to day for about a year before this became public. That detail matters more than the announcement itself. This wasn't a sudden rupture, it was a slow leak that just surfaced.
Here's the pattern worth watching. The constraint on frontier AI right now isn't compute or data, both of which Google has in abundance. It's conviction. Senior researchers are increasingly betting that a small team with a sharp focus can outrun a well resourced giant carrying years of organizational weight. That's a retention problem no compensation package fully solves, because the thing being traded away isn't salary, it's speed and ownership.
If your best people believed they could build faster somewhere smaller, would they still choose to stay?
