Cisco AI Restructuring

Cisco just reported record quarterly revenue of $15.8B, up 12% year-over-year.

Then it announced 4,000 layoffs.

This is the defining paradox of the AI era: growth and headcount are decoupling.

The numbers tell the strategic story. Cisco's AI infrastructure orders have already hit $5.3 billion this fiscal year, and the company now expects to close FY2026 at roughly $9 billion in AI orders — nearly double its earlier $5 billion projection. To capitalize on that demand, it is willing to absorb up to $1 billion in restructuring costs and reallocate capital toward silicon, optics, security, and AI-augmented internal workflows.

What's noteworthy is not the cut itself. It is the deliberate signal: even a 41-year-old networking incumbent with a record quarter believes its current cost structure is misaligned with where value will be created in the next 24 months.

For executives watching this, three implications stand out. First, "strong earnings" is no longer a shield against restructuring — it has become the financial cover that makes restructuring possible. Second, the companies winning AI infrastructure dollars are reinvesting them into engineering depth, not preserving legacy roles. Third, the workforce question is no longer whether AI changes jobs, but how fast leadership teams are willing to redesign their org charts around it.

The hardest leadership decisions in 2026 will not be made in downturns. They will be made on the back of record quarters.

Are we ready to make them?
