AI Reshaping Hiring

The "AI is taking your job" headline is wrong. What is actually happening is more consequential.

AI is not coming for most people in a layoff notice. It is coming for them in a job posting that never gets written.

US job openings have fallen from 2.4 million in 2022 to under 1.0 million in early 2026 — a more than 50 percent collapse from peak. About 12 percent of service firms now say they have cut hiring directly because of AI. Copywriting postings are down 53 percent, project management 48 percent, call center work 67 percent. Hiring of 22 to 25 year olds into high-exposure roles is down roughly 14 percent since ChatGPT launched.

If you still have your job, this feels invisible. The team gets leaner, your scope stretches wider, you quietly absorb work that used to belong to someone else. It feels like productivity. It is actually the labor market repricing in slow motion.

The strategic question for leaders is no longer which roles to cut. It is which capabilities you have already lost by not hiring this year's cohort — and whether your senior people are compounding skills fast enough to cover for them.

63 percent of companies say they will reskill internally rather than hire AI specialists externally. In five years, that bet will look either visionary or catastrophic, depending on whether reskilling was a real operating program or a slide in a town hall.

If you are hiring right now, are you hiring for tasks AI cannot do yet — or slow-walking the role until you decide whether you need it at all?
