Anthropic Decart Acquisition
Anthropic is reportedly about to spend $6 billion, and it's not buying a bigger model.
The Claude maker is in talks to acquire Israeli startup Decart AI, which builds real-time generative video and GPU-efficiency tech for AI inference. If it closes, it would be Anthropic's largest acquisition to date, and it would fold directly into Anthropic's inference organization rather than sit as a separate product line.
For two years the AI narrative has been about capability: bigger context windows, better benchmarks, faster reasoning. But as usage scales into the billions of tokens per day, the more urgent number for any lab heading toward an IPO is cost per token served, not just quality per token. Decart's technology helps chips run inference more efficiently, which is a margin problem, not a capability problem.
That shift matters for how you evaluate every AI vendor pitch you're getting right now. The labs that can serve their models profitably at scale will outlast the ones that can only demo them impressively.
Decart previously raised $300 million with Nvidia as an investor, and the deal is still early stage and could fall through.
Is efficiency becoming the real moat in AI, ahead of raw model capability?
