Alphabet Gemini Delay
Alphabet just lost roughly 200 billion dollars in market cap over a model that hasn't shipped.
Gemini 3.5 Pro is reportedly months behind schedule. The reason Bloomberg cites is telling: its coding performance fell short of Google's own internal bar. This is the third straight delay, and at some point three misses stops looking like bad luck and starts looking structural.
Here is what I think the market is actually pricing in. It is not a delayed product. It is doubt about whether Google can close the gap on the one capability that now defines frontier models: writing production-grade code. While Gemini slips, OpenAI and Meta have shipped models that outpace Google on exactly that axis.
For anyone building an AI roadmap, there is a real lesson here. Betting your enterprise stack on a single lab's promised release is a risk with a price tag. The teams that stayed model-agnostic this year are the ones not rewriting their plans this week.
Capability leadership in this market is now measured in months, not years. The moat is not the model you have. It is how fast you can swap to a better one.
When you evaluate an AI vendor, how much weight do you put on the roadmap they promise versus the model they can ship today?
