AI Layoffs Entry Level

AI-linked layoffs just crossed 50,000 in 2026. That's 17% of every U.S. job cut announced this year.

The headline number is loud. The signal underneath it is louder.

PayPal is eliminating ~4,760 roles. Cloudflare cut 1,100 (20% of its workforce). Coinbase cut 700 (14%). Total tech layoffs for 2026 have crossed 144,000 people, averaging nearly 1,000 per day.

But the layoffs aren't the real story. Economists tracking the data are flagging something quieter and more durable: entry-level hiring is collapsing. Not because companies are openly replacing juniors with AI, but because the work juniors used to do, drafting, summarizing, reconciling, first-pass analysis, is the work AI is best at right now.

That has three implications worth sitting with.

First, the talent pipeline for 2030 is being reshaped today by hiring decisions nobody is announcing in a press release.

Second, "AI productivity gains" and "AI workforce displacement" are the same line item viewed from two sides of the P&L. Leaders need to be honest about that internally, even when the external messaging stays optimistic.

Third, the companies that will compound the hardest over the next decade are the ones still investing in junior talent right now, because in five years they'll be the only ones with mid-career operators who actually understand the business.

Cutting headcount is the easy quarter. Building the bench is the hard decade.
