If your automations have outgrown drag-and-drop, or your data has to stay on your own servers, n8n's self-hosted Community edition is free — a technical teammate can build and test a real workflow, with code where needed, before you choose a cloud plan.

What n8n does
n8n is a workflow automation tool that lets you connect applications and automate repetitive processes through a visual canvas. You build automations by linking nodes — each node represents an app, a data step, or a piece of logic. It works with common tools like Slack, Google Sheets, OpenAI, Discord, and any service that exposes a webhook or HTTP API.
A key design choice is that n8n runs wherever you prefer. You can self-host it on your own infrastructure using Docker and access the full source code, or use n8n's managed cloud service. The self-hosted Community edition is free; the Cloud Starter plan runs $20 per month billed annually. For teams with data-residency requirements, the on-premises option means your data never leaves your own environment.
Beyond simple point-to-point integrations, n8n supports building AI agent workflows — connecting to AI models, setting up retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, and keeping humans in the loop at defined approval steps. You can write JavaScript or Python inside any workflow step when the visual interface isn't enough, and you can test individual steps with real data without re-running an entire workflow.
Key capabilities
Visual workflow builder
A node-based canvas lets you map out automations visually, seeing inputs and outputs at every step without unnecessary navigation.
Code when you need it
You can drop JavaScript or Python into any step in a workflow, so logic that can't be handled visually doesn't become a blocker.
AI agent construction
n8n supports connecting AI models, building multi-agent setups, and enforcing structured inputs and outputs to keep AI behaviour predictable.
Flexible deployment options
Run n8n on your own servers via Docker or use the hosted cloud version — the choice stays with you, and the full source code is available on GitHub.
Human-in-the-loop controls
You can combine rule-based automation with approval steps, so AI actions only proceed when the right conditions or people sign off.
Step-level debugging and testing
Re-run individual nodes, replay or mock external data, and review a logs view to find problems without clicking through an entire workflow each time.
Best for
- Technical teams — developers, IT ops, or DevOps — who need automation that goes beyond simple drag-and-drop and want the option to write custom code
- Organisations with data-residency or privacy requirements that make a fully on-premises deployment necessary
- Teams integrating AI models into internal processes and needing visibility into every step of the agent's reasoning
- Businesses already using common tools like Slack, Google Sheets, or OpenAI that want to connect them without building custom integrations from scratch
- Companies evaluating automation costs carefully: the free self-hosted edition is a meaningful option if you have the infrastructure and skills to run it
Worth knowing
- Self-hosting is free but requires your team to manage infrastructure, updates, and security — factor in that operational overhead before choosing it over the paid cloud plan
- n8n suits technically capable users; non-technical staff will face a steeper learning curve compared with tools built primarily for no-code audiences
- Implementation is estimated at one to two weeks, which is relatively light, but workflows involving AI agents or legacy system integrations will take closer to the longer end
- The $20/month Cloud Starter price (billed annually) is an entry point — Pro is $50/month and enterprise features such as SSO, RBAC, and audit logs sit at higher tiers; confirm current pricing directly with n8n before budgeting
- If your automation needs are very simple and your team has no developers, a more guided no-code tool may be a better starting point than n8n
How n8n compares
Automation platforms differ less on what they connect than on who builds the workflows, where they run and how usage is billed. n8n is the technical end: a visual canvas with code in any step, and the option to run it on your own servers.
vs Make
Make is a visual, no-code automation platform with 3,000+ app integrations, branching logic and a free plan, priced by credit volume from $12 a month. n8n offers a similar canvas but adds JavaScript or Python in any step, step-level debugging and a self-hosted option. Non-technical operations teams usually find Make easier; developer-led teams, or anyone whose data must stay in-house, often prefer n8n.
vs Zapier AI
Zapier AI builds multi-step automations from a plain-language description and connects to over 9,000 apps, from free to $69 a month. It is aimed at teams with no developers. n8n trades some of that simplicity for code steps, human-in-the-loop approvals and on-premises deployment. Choose Zapier for fast no-code wins; n8n for control over logic and data.
vs Gumloop
Gumloop is a visual canvas for AI agents that staff call up with an @mention in Slack, Microsoft Teams or Gmail, with templates for CRM, support triage and data analysis, from free to $37 a month. n8n is a general automation tool that also builds agent and RAG workflows, with code and self-hosting when you need them. Pick Gumloop for agents the whole team talks to; n8n for automations engineers own.

Decide hosting first. Self-host the free Community edition if you can run, patch and secure it; otherwise price Cloud Starter at $20 a month or Pro at $50 (billed annually). SSO, role-based access and audit logs sit on higher tiers.
