What Descript does

Descript is an AI-powered audio and video editing tool built around a simple idea: once your recording is transcribed, you edit the media by editing the words on screen. Delete a sentence from the transcript and the corresponding audio or video is removed. It works for interviews, webinars, product demos, podcasts, screen recordings, and social clips.

On top of the text-based editing core, Descript adds a set of AI tools that handle common production tasks automatically. These include removing filler words like 'um' and 'uh', cleaning up background noise without studio equipment, adding captions in one click, correcting eye contact so presenters look at the camera even when reading a script, and generating B-roll footage from a text prompt.

Descript also includes an AI assistant called Underlord that can take a brief, draft a script, apply layouts and transitions, and suggest edits. For teams that need to record remotely, a built-in Rooms feature lets participants record together online. The tool connects with Zoom, YouTube, Slack, Adobe Premiere, and Squadcast.

Key capabilities

Text-based video editing

Upload or record audio or video and Descript automatically transcribes it. From there, editing the transcript edits the media — no timeline experience needed.

Automatic audio cleanup

Studio Sound reduces background noise and improves voice quality without specialist microphones or soundproofing. Filler word removal strips out 'ums', 'uhs', and similar habits in one pass.

AI clip and caption creation

Descript can identify moments from a longer recording suitable for short clips, and can add branded, accessible captions with a couple of clicks.

Script and design assistance

The Underlord AI assistant can draft or refine a script, apply professionally designed layouts, and generate custom B-roll video from a text prompt.

Voice cloning and regeneration

On paid plans, Descript can clone a speaker's voice so that correcting a word in the transcript also corrects the audio and adjusts mouth movement in the video to match.

Podcast and remote recording

Multitrack audio editing and a built-in remote recording room mean teams can produce, edit, and publish audio or video podcasts without switching between multiple tools.

Best for

  • Marketing teams that produce product demos, how-to videos, or webinar recordings without a dedicated video editor on staff
  • Sales enablement and customer success teams that need to turn interviews or recorded calls into polished short clips
  • Learning and development teams creating internal training videos who want consistent quality without studio equipment
  • Podcasters — solo or team — who want to record, edit, and publish audio or video podcasts in one place
  • Small businesses that publish regularly across YouTube, social, or their website and need to keep production time manageable

Worth knowing

  • Pricing is per person per month (billed annually): Hobbyist at $16, Creator at $24, Business at $50. Teams on the Creator plan are billed separately per seat, so costs scale with headcount.
  • Each plan has a monthly media hour allowance. High-volume teams — for example those publishing multiple videos per day — should check whether their expected usage fits within their plan's limits before committing.
  • AI features such as voice cloning, 4K export, video generation, and the full Underlord toolset are only available on mid-tier and higher plans. The free tier is limited in both media hours and AI credits.
  • The tool is designed for audio and video content production. If your primary need is something other than creating or editing recordings — such as written content, data analysis, or image design — Descript is not the right fit.
  • Descript connects with Zoom, YouTube, Slack, Adobe Premiere, and Squadcast. If your workflow depends on tools outside that list, check integration compatibility before adopting.

How Descript compares

Descript is an editor for recordings you already have, edited by editing the transcript. Its neighbours clip long videos for social, edit on a phone, generate video with no camera, or write from the recording — choose by what you start with and what you need at the end.

vs OpusClip

OpusClip takes a finished long video and cuts it into short captioned clips reframed for TikTok, Shorts and Reels, with a virality score and a free plan. Descript is a full editor for the recording itself, with transcript editing, Studio Sound and filler-word removal. Edit the master in Descript; add OpusClip if high-volume social clipping is the main job.

vs Captions

Captions is an AI video editor on web, iOS and Android that auto-edits footage, adds captions, corrects eye contact and publishes straight to social platforms, from free to $24.99 a month on Max. Descript overlaps on captions and eye contact but adds multitrack podcast editing and a remote recording room. Creators working mainly from a phone may prefer Captions; podcast and webinar teams, Descript.

vs Synthesia

Synthesia generates presenter videos from a script with 240+ AI avatars, so nobody has to film, from $29 a month. Descript assumes you have recorded something and helps you edit it. If your team would rather not be on camera at all — for training or multilingual updates — Synthesia is the better fit.

vs Castmagic

Castmagic does not edit media; it turns recordings into transcripts, show notes, blog posts, newsletters and social captions, from $19 a month. Descript produces the finished audio or video. A podcast team might use both — Descript to produce the episode, Castmagic to write what promotes it.
