What Gavel does

Gavel has two main parts. Gavel Workflows takes your existing Word and PDF templates, pairs them with a client intake form, and uses the answers to generate finished legal documents automatically. You add conditional logic and branching rules so the output adapts to each client's situation rather than requiring manual edits afterward.

The second part, Gavel Exec, is a companion module focused on contract review. Working inside Microsoft Word and online, it helps lawyers do a first-pass review, draft or rewrite clauses, produce redlines, apply playbooks to enforce consistent positions, and compare clause language against market data. The two modules can be used together or independently.

Gavel connects with solutions many legal practices already use — Clio, DocuSign, Zapier, Google Drive, and Stripe — so it can slot into existing billing and matter-management workflows rather than replacing them. Implementation is estimated at two to four weeks, and Gavel offers free onboarding and training for your team.

Key capabilities

Word and PDF automation

Upload your existing Word documents or PDF forms and convert them into guided workflows. Clients or staff answer intake questions, and Gavel generates the finished document.

Conditional logic in documents

Add branching rules and calculations so document content changes based on intake answers. This reduces manual post-generation editing for complex or variable documents.

AI contract review in Word

Gavel Exec runs a first-pass contract review, highlights key issues, and surfaces suggested redlines and comments directly inside Microsoft Word.

Playbooks and benchmarking

Apply built-in or custom playbooks to keep contract positions consistent across matters, and compare clause language to market data to flag terms that look off-market.

Secure client intake portal

Collect sensitive client information through a branded, encrypted portal, then route those answers directly into document generation.

Pre-built legal template library

Gavel includes ready-to-use automated templates across common practice areas — estate planning, family law, real estate, corporate, probate, and more — so you don't have to build every workflow from scratch.

Best for

  • Solo practitioners and small-to-mid-size law firms that produce a high volume of similar documents and want to reduce repetitive drafting time
  • Legal teams handling contract review who want AI-assisted redlining and clause benchmarking without leaving Microsoft Word
  • Practices in estate planning, real estate, corporate, family law, probate, or bankruptcy that rely heavily on standardized templates
  • Firms already using Clio, DocuSign, or Stripe that want document automation to connect with their existing practice management stack
  • In-house counsel or transactional attorneys who need to enforce consistent contract positions across a team using playbooks

Worth knowing

  • Gavel Exec contract review is a separate, add-on module priced at $160 per user per month — budget for both if you need document automation and AI contract review together
  • Meaningful time savings depend on having well-structured existing templates to upload; practices without standardized documents may need to invest in template preparation before setup
  • The free tier and entry-level Lite plan ($83/month) may be limiting for firms with higher document volumes; larger teams should evaluate the Standard, Pro, or Scale tiers carefully
  • Gavel has been acquired by Relativity, which may affect the product roadmap, support structure, or pricing over time — worth monitoring if you're planning a multi-year commitment
  • If your work is primarily litigation-focused rather than transactional or document-heavy, the core value proposition may not apply strongly enough to justify the cost
